John McMahon was born and raised in the suburbs of NYC. At an early age John was an explorer, a dreamer and a thinker. NYC always attracted him and he would go there after high school and spend his days in the city. His adventures in NY were on foot, on a bicycle or a car, the plan was to experience the art world first hand. Inspired by the guerrilla stickers of the late 90’s, John set out to release and develop his passion for art. He enrolled in a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) track in Studio Art at William Paterson University of New Jersey. Ever eager to apply his newly earned degree, John didn’t even wait to pick up the simple piece of paper celebrating his studies. Instead, he had the diploma mailed to meet him as he immediately set out to cross the country in three days and a half. He arrived in California ready to put all the knowledge and skill to use. In this new land of the west, things fell into place for John as a professional artist. He became part of the School of Industrial Design at the Academy of Art University, where he instructed Model Making courses for four years. The years John spent in San Francisco provided him with great exposure to various artistic methods. Although all these practices added depth to his bodies of work, John felt the desire to focus strictly on the vision for his designs. The answer was to enroll in the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Furniture Design program at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). This move was the key to finding that mental and physical space necessary to shape a clear definition of his design concepts. John McMahon is currently half way through his MFA training at SCAD.
